As I’m venturing into the landscape of home ownership, I’ve realized there is more than meets the eye in terms of buying & maintaining a home. Being my second home, the learning curve is less of a burden- but for all you FIRST TIME HOME BUYERS, think before you act!
The maintenance tasks that new home owners face are endless; but 4 that really stand out.
1. Professional Paint Job – There are major repairs you should call the PRO for & painting is one of them.
Hot Tip: The easiest way to spruce up a house is a new, paint job. Shop for a quality exterior & interior acrylic paint. Previously a sales professional with Sherwin-Williams, I would recommend them. Visiting review sites such as Yelp & Angie’s list to qualify your contractor is also a must. Lastly, inspect the finished product – if your’e not happy, let the painting company know.
2. Clogged Drains – It’s a dirty job, so let the professionals handle this one as well.
Hot Tip: They happen with refuse is flushed down the drain instead of being thrown into the trash, so its important to keep as much “trash” from entering the drains as possible. Watch children’s toys, baby wipes, excess amount of grease all being put down the drain.
3. Tackling Running Toilets
Hot Tip: If your toilet is gurgling instead of running, the issue may be in the sewer line itself – get a video inspection in this situation as well to make sure that the sewer line is draining properly.
Hot Tip: Home energy audits can be well worth the cost in identifying where you need to insulate your home.
With these essential new homeowner skills, you’ll be able to breathe easy all year around.
